He was the son of Edward Rorer and Jane R Peeky.
Compiler's Comment | His mother, Jane Peeky Rorer, may have named her second son after her grandfather, Jacob Peeky.
(with Parents) 1860 Census | 16 July 1860 | On 16 July 1860, Jacob P Rorer was living with his parents in New Britain Township, Bucks, PA and attending school.2 |
(with parents) 1870 Census | 15 August 1870 | By 15 August 1870, Jacob and his family had moved to Plumstead Township, Bucks, PA. The seventeen year-old was attending school.3 |
(Heir) Probate | 22 October 1889 | On 22 October 1889, the 36 year old was named heir of his mother's estate which was probated at Doylestown, Bucks, PA.4 |
Occupation* | 1891 | He was a driver living at 1030 Buttonwood, Philadelphia, PA, in 1891 and 1892.5 |
Compiler's Comment | Presumably he was a driver of a wagon or stagecoach.
Residence* | 1894 | By 1894, Jacob had moved to at 422 N. 10th, Philadelphia, PA. He remained there through at least 1897 and continued to work as a driver.6 |
(Witness) 1900 Census | June 1900 | He was living in the household of Thomas Busbey at 1013 Parrish, Philadelphia Ward 14, PA on June 1900. He was a driver as was Thomas Busbey.7 |
Residence | 1908 | As of 1908, Jacob had moved to 1023 Ogden, Philadelphia, PA. Jacob remained there at least through the date of the printing of the 1918 Philadelphia Directory. His occupation was still listed as driver.8 |
1910 Census | 16 April 1910 | Jacob appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of 1023 Ogden Street, 14th Ward, Philadelphia, PA, enumerated 16 April 1910. This is the same address he had in the city directories of 1908 and 1918. He was a single, 54 year old cab driver and living as a boarder in the home Charles W. Johnson. The census taker spelled the surname as Rohrer.9 |
1910 Census* | 17 April 1910 | Jacob appeared on another 1910 census on the next day, April 17th. He was an inmate of the House of Correction, Ward 41, Philadelphia, PA. He was single and age 56. His name was spelled correctly.10 |
Compiler's Comment* | Did he get drunk Saturday, the 16th and end up in jail on Sunday the 17th? The House of Correction was located at 8001 State Road in the Holmesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia. The original facility was built in 1874 and rebuilt in 1927. The prison was built to incarcerate those accused of a minor wrongdoing. Therefore, it was built without perimeter walls or observations towers. Although the compiler has not been able to find the records of the House of Correction for 1910, it is likely Jacob was jailed for drunkenness, brawling or some other misdemeanor.11
Occupation | 1918 | Sixty-five year old Jacob was a watchman in 1918 and still residing at 1023 Ogden, Philadelphia, PA.12 |
Death* | 3 July 1940 | Jacob died on 3 July 1940 in the Delaware County Home, Lima, Middletown, Delaware, PA at age 87. His residence prior to admittance to the County Home was 250 Fairfax, Drexel Hill, Delaware, PA.13 |

Both the bride and groom were from Doylestown Township. The groom was a 21 year old laborer. The bride was 25. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Jacob B. Krewson.7 |
Compiler's Comment* | The record extracted listed the bride as Mary E. instead of Mary L. Her age was listed as 25 when she was actually 31. Did she not want her groom to know she was ten years older than he?
Note* | Reverend Krewson was minister of the Forestville/Forest Grove Presbyterian Church.8

Church | 6 March 1902 | She dropped out of the Doylestown Presbyterian Church on 6 March 1902.4 |
Compiler's Comment | This was around the time she married her second husband, Henry Reynolds. Had she moved back to Doylestown with her three children after her first husband died and continued to be a member of the Doylestown church? Now she would be moving to Philadelphia with her new husband and would be joining another church?
Census 1910* | April 1910 | She and Henry Reynolds appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Philadelphia, PA, at 6127 Sansom Street, enumerated April 1910. Their child Myra was listed as living with them.10 |
Compiler's Comment | Mary Louise indicated in the 1910 census that she had given birth to four children and four were still living. Two of the children with her first husband, Ulysses Pope, have been identified. The third one remains unknown.
Census 1920* | 12 January 1920 | Mary and Henry were still residing at 6127 Sansom Street, Philadelphia, PA on 12 January 1920. 16 year old Myra was attending school. Henry was working as a machinist at a machine tools company. Their home was owned free of a mortgage.10 |

Misc* | 9 July 1890 | This article appeared in the The Central News on 10 Jul 1890: "Return after Nine Years. Joseph Rorer, son of the late Edward Rorer, returned home on Wednesday afternoon, after an absence of nearly nine years. Joseph left the paternal roof in July, 1881, when hardly more than a boy. He disappeared completely: no word ever reached home from him, and his relatives thought him dead. After leaving Doylestown he took a train for New York, and during his long absence visited nearly every State in the Union. He spent some time in Liverpool England, but tiring of England, he came back to the United States and settled down in Pittsburg [sic], where he works in a rolling mill. Recently, he was seized with an irresistible longing to visit his family and the scenes of his boyhood around Doylestown. He started for the East, and arrived in Philadelphia on Wednesday morning. At the Ninth and Green streets depot he met Walter Hoffman, of Doylestown, an old friend, from whom he learned for the first time of the death of his father and mother. He came to Doylestown in the afternoon, and the first relative he found was his sister Mary, now Mrs. Ulysses Pope, who was overjoyed to see him. His brothers and sister, who had long thought him dead, could hardly realize that he was among the living. Joseph will spend a few weeks with his brothers and sister, and then will probably return to Pittsburg [sic]. Doylestown Democrat."5 |
