Birth*3 January 1897 According to his birth registration, Russell Rorer Gordon was born on 3 January 1897 in Tinicum Township, Bucks, PA. His father, Gilbert, was a laborer; his mother was Minnie Gordon.4,5,6
Compiler's Comment* He used this date of 03 Jan 1897 on his World War II draft registration. On his World War I draft registration, however, he listed 2 Oct 1896 as his birth date. The Oct date also appeared on the Social Security Death Index. Since the date of 03 Jan 1897 was given to the Clerk of the Orphan's Court on 24 May 1897, shortly after Russell's birth, this should be the most accurate of the two dates provided in various sources. It could be there was another Russell Gordon with the alternative birth date of 02 Oct 1896. However, on the World War I draft registration of Russell Gordon who claimed the Oct birth date, his next of kin was listed as mother, Minnie Gordon. The odds are against their being two Minnie Gordons each giving birth to a Russell within three months of one another. The reason for the alternative birth date remains unknown.
He was the son of Gilbert S. Gordon and Araminda Rorer.1
(with Parents) Census 190021 June 1900 He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Tinicum Township, Bucks, PA, in the household of his parents, Gilbert S. Gordon and Araminda Rorer.7
(with Parents) Census 191021 April 1910 By 21 April 1910, he had moved to Bedminster Township, Bucks, PA with his family. The thirteen year old was attending school.1
Draft registration5 June 1918 5 June 1918, Russell Rorer Gordon, who lived at 1551 Marston, Philadelphia, PA, registered for the World War I draft. He indicated both he and his father were born near Ottsville, Bucks, PA. He was working at the John Wanamaker Department store at 13th and Market, Philadelphia. His nearest relative was his mother, Minnie Gordon, at the same address. Russell was of medium height, medium build, with brown eyes and light hair.3
