Marriage* | He married May (Unknown).4
Incarceration | 4 November 1894 | On 4 November 1894, an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia, PA read as follows: "Doylestown, PA., Nov.3-The crowd at the Democratic mass meeting last night afforded an opportunity to a number of pickpockets and thieves to drop into town and ply their trade upon citizens of Doylestown. Three young men, Charles Rorer, Samuel Ash and John Lipscomb, claiming Philadelphia as their homes, were arrested in the evening and lodged in jail. Rorer was found in the bedroom of Landlord Heist by his daughter, Mrs. Flora Zorns. An examination proved that the bureau in the room had been ransacked and a sum of money taken. Ash and Lipscomb, who were in company with the prisoner, were also arrested and all given a hearing this morning before Justice Clemens. The prisoners were each held in $1000 bail, in default of which they were taken back to jail for their appearance at court."5 |
Criminal* | 8 November 1894 | He was named in another article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia, PA on 8 November 1894. "Doylestown, Nov. 7-Charles Rorer, John Libscomb and Samuel Ash, the trio lying in the Doylestown jail for robbing the Monument House, were yesterday identified by Special Officer George W. Sutton, accompanied by Landlord Ennis, of Lambertville, as the parties who robbed Mrs. Ennis of her diamonds at the hotel in the latter place a few days ago. Ash yesterday made a full confession as to the Lambertville robbery, but denied any knowledge of the stealing at the the Doylestown Hotel. He admitted having been in Moyamensing prison eight months for working a flim-flam game."6 |
Incarceration | 21 November 1894 | Charles Rorer was incarcerated on 21 November 1894 at Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, PA. He was 26 years old and from Bucks County with a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair (bald.) He stood 5'6' tall and weighed 148 pounds. His right hand was partially paralyzed. He had attended public school for seven years, was an abstainer and single. He left home at the age of seventeen. His trade was salesman. He was convicted of burglary, larceny and receiving and sentenced to three years and six months. His prisoner number was A7769. His brother was in prison at the same time.7 |
Compiler's Comment* | Although Charles said he was single on 21 Nov 1894, the day of incarceration, he had a daughter born c. 1895. The child could have been fathered prior to his incarceration. Perhaps he had not married the mother, thus his single status. He was living with the mother of his child in the 1905 NY state census.
Travel* | 2 April 1904 | Charles arrived in New York 2 April 1904 on the ship Lucania having sailed from Liverpool. He was married, age 36 and his last place of residence was London.8 |

Incarceration | 31 July 1907 | Sometime between the 1905 state census and 1907, he travelled to London. The whereabouts of his wife and child have not been discovered. On 31 July 1907, Charles Alexander Rorer was charged at Marlborough Police Court, London, England with stealing and receiving jewelry valued between $25,000 and $30,000 from West-end jewelers. |
Incarceration* | 19 September 1907 | The trial on charges of robbing Tiffany's and Bond Street jewelers was held at Old Bailey, London, England on 19 September 1907. The scam involved buying an inexpensive piece of jewelry, then returning to the store the next day under the pretext of buying some more expensive jewelry. While the clerk was retrieving jewelry to show the customer, the less expensive jewelry purchased the prior day was substituted in the display tray and the more valuable piece pocketed. Another man charged in the scam, Arthur Greene, was convicted and sentenced to serve five years in prison. The charges against Rorer were dismissed because some of the witnesses believed the second man involved was Arthur Tunics who had a similar appearance to Rorer.9,10,11 |
Marriage* | 29 June 1908 | He married Sarah Hipshman, daughter of Julius Hipshman and Ida Sharpe, on 29 June 1908 at New York, Manhattan, NY. His parents were William H. Rorer and and Clara Van Wort. Charles middle name was Alexander.12 |
Criminal | 29 January 1909 | He was "RORER IN THE TOILS. Charles Rorer, who was tried on thirteen indictments for robbery and pocket picking, Monday, in Trenton, is a former Doylestown boy, who make a remarkable record in his long career in crime. Former schoolmates of Rorer at this place sat that even as a boy he seemed unable to keep his hands off others folks' possessions. Rorer's record is a bad one. Here in Doylestown he tried to rob the Monument House in 1894, but was detected and sent to the "Pen." Not many weeks ago he was arrested for alleged complicity in diamond robberies in London, Eng., but got off. It is said he has operated in nearly every large city in the United States and Europe." on 29 January 1909.13 |

Compiler's Comment* | Katherine's parents have not been identified. In the 1910 census for Doylestown, PA, Katherine's grandmother, Sarah Rorer Downing, states that she gave birth to two children and two are still living. We have a record of the two, Llewellyn and Edwin. Although's Llewellyn's marital status is single in 1910, it is likely he is a widower and Kathryn's father as the two were together in both the 1910 and 1920 census. No further record of Katherine Downing has been found. |
