Birth*8 January 1884 Earl Clifford Rorer was born on 8 January 1884 in KS.1,2,3
He was the son of John R. Rorer and Emma Shrek
(Child) State census1 March 1885 One year old Earl Clifford Rorer was living with his parents, John and Emma, on 1 March 1885, in Pittsburg, Crawford, KS. He was born in KS.1
Marriage* He married his first wife, Nora Harris, presumably sometime prior to the birth of son, John H. Rorer, in December 1908. She died before the 1910 census was taken when Earl was listed as a widower.4
(with Parents) Census 191021 April 1910 Earl appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Shawnee, Pottawatomie, OK, in the household of his parents, John R. Rorer and Emma Shrek. He was a manager of an auto garage.4
Compiler's Comment* Earl's mother was probably helping care for her motherless grandson, John.
Marriage*aft 1910 census Sometime after the 1910 census was taken, Earl married his second wife, Elizabeth F. Bowen, daughter of Horrace Bowen and Samantha (?).5
Draft registration*September 1918  Earl registered for the draft in September 1918. His permanent home address was at 130 E. 2nd, Salida, Chaffee, CO. He worked as a machinist in the railroad shop of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. He had a medium build, was medium height with gray eyes and light hair. His nearest relative was his wife, Emma Rorer, living at 2224 Greenwood Ave, Pueblo, CO.3
Compiler's Comment Earl referred to his wife as Emma in the draft registration. In the census records she was listed as Elizabeth. Was Emma a nickname for his wife? Why was his wife's address in Pueblo, CO and his was in Salida, CO? Were they were separated or were living conditions in Pueblo preferable to what was available in Salida?
Census 1920*19 January 1920 Earl and Elizabeth appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Salida City, Chaffee, CO, at 330 E. 4th Street, enumerated 19 January 1920 Their son Jack was listed as living with them. Earl was a machinist.5
Census 1930*9 April 1930 Earl and Elizabeth were still residing in Salida City when the 1930 Federal Census was enumerated 9 April 1930. The family had moved to 601 E. Street. Their 22 year old son, Jack, was still living with them. Earl was a proprietor of a garage and had completed eighth grade. The family lived in a rented home and owned a radio. There were two lodgers: Fred D. Diller and Gordon A. Hare.6
Census 1940*8 April 1940 By the time the 1940 census was enumerated, Earl and Elizabeth had moved to Phoenix, Maricopa, AZ. Earl had been unemployed for 25 weeks and was looking for work as a machinist. He paid $8/month for his rented home.7
Draft registration26 April 1942  Earl registered for the World War II draft on 26 April 1942 when he was residing at Chula Vista, CA. His birth was listed as 8 Jan 1890 which differs from every other birth date source which used the year 1884. He was a mechanic at Rohr Air Craft, Chula Vista. Earl was 5'11", 160 pounds with blue eyes, gray hair and a ruddy complexion. He had a scar on the palm of his left hand. His next of kin was listed as Mabel Saunders [his sister] at the Windermeyer Hotel, Santa Monica, CA.8
Compiler's Comment Why weren't either Earl's wife or son listed as the individual who would always know where Earl lived? Were they estranged from Earl?
Marriage*after 27 December 1960 He married Mathilde Ehlers presumbaly after 27 December 1960 when his second wife died.9
Death*21 August 1970 He died on 21 August 1970 at 92024 Encinitas, San Diego, CA, at age 86. The Encinitas address was from the Social Security Death Index. However, his death certificate states his residence was 123 Jasper Street, #1, Leucadia, CA. He died at Scripps Memorial Hospital from acute cardio-respiratory failure as a result of a an accident which caused an acute, traumatic subdural hematoma. His remains were cremated on 24 Aug 1970 at La Vista Memorial Park, National City. His widow Mathilde provided the information for the death certificate.2,9
